Somehow unbeknownst to us, we here at Austin Eat Cetera have embarked on a search of sorts for the city’s best sandwich.  After we realized the majority of our posts focused on the multi-layered things, we decided to dedicate a new tag for use in our hunt for Austin’s tastiest sandwich.  In a city where healthy meets delicious more often than not, we figured it was a worthwhile undertaking.

The newest addition to our must-try roster?  Lucky’s Puccias.

Pleasant Surprises and Shocking Upsets at Gypsy Picnic

As you might have garnered from my comrades’ previous posts, the Gypsy Picnic food trailer festival took place this past Saturday (Nov. 6) from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.  It goes without saying that there were plenty of delicious eats to be had at the event–which was, for the record, like Austin City Limits for food–so I’ll be concentrating on what I found to be the most unexpectedly tasty dish as well as a cart that wasn’t all it was hyped up to be.

Festival Fun – Parlor Pizza

In Dinner, Festival, Mason Scheer on November 7, 2010 at 12:19 am

We are just about ready to hit up some big shows. I hear “Take On Me” playing in the background, and I’m feeling pumped. I have a margarita in my system, and ready to get some food.

Next up, Parlor Pizza. Nothing fancy, just a regular line leading up to a tent. Right as I’m in the front of the line, they run out. They put up a sign to wait 5 minutes. I’m with friends, and the staff is really friendly.

$5 later, I get my slice of pepperoni. Honestly, it’s what you’d expect from a tent pizza. It’s good, not the best slice I’ve ever had, but good. It does the job, tiding me over between bands.

Thursday, November 3 was National Sandwich Day, a holiday that definitely deserves a proper celebration at one of Austin’s most storied eateries, the New World Deli. I had heard so much about New World but I had yet to pay the place a much-deserved visit. I figured a day dedicated to the wonderful creation of the sandwich was the perfect opportunity to give New world a try.

Bold tastes, small place

Before the Texas Longhorns football team’s season-indicative loss to the Baylor Bears on Saturday, I stopped by a quaint, friendly deli in my neighborhood. Fricano’s Deli sits on 31st and Speedway streets along the line where the two streets basically merge into one road. You may miss it if you’re not paying attention as it is a very small place next to a convenience store.

Where to Eat Cheap Today

In Breakfast, Dinner, Drinks, Free, Rebecca Adams on October 26, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Relax and enjoy a beer (or two) tonight

  • Start the morning off with donuts at Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery on Airport.  I am in no way a “donut person” but I’m seriously addicted to these.  I dare you to just eat one.
  • Grab some fusion deliciousness at The Peached Tortilla on your way to class on 24th St.  I recommend the two bbq brisket sliders and fries combo The Daily Texan agrees.

East Austin Unveiled: Rio’s Brazilian Café

Dinner at Rio's Brazilian

Like most everyone in Austin, I am hit with a slight tinge of paranoia when venture across Interstate 35 into the east side of the city. It’s seen as the “dangerous” part of town, somewhere you should aim to avoid when the sun goes down. Either that, or white hipsterville. While the area does have its fair share of sketchy neighborhoods and artsy-fartsy establishments, the food there certainly should not be discounted. And in this case, I am telling you to run, not walk, to Rio’s Brazilian Café.

On the Road in (or around) Austin: Part I

Whip In: "Namaste Y'all"

I came across this story on a convenience store news web site (not on my usual RSS journey but the headline peaked my interest) that talked about Whip In, a Texas-Indian, convenience store-cafe hybrid.   Confused?  Here’s a breakdown of the place:

-Sustainable, local, and organic produce and groceries (think: anything from austinuts to organic toilet paper)

-A cafe with Gujarati-style Indian food that’s “mom approved” by owner Dipak Topiwala’s own mother

AMAZING beer selection and beer garden that puts Whole Foods to shame

-Live shows from local musicians on the outdoor patio

Rediscovering the meaning of “fried” food

Fried Frito Pie at the State Fair of Texas

Fried Frito Pie

If you haven’t taken the chance to steal away to Dallas to watch the Red River Rivalry game between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners, and you don’t live in the city, you probably haven’t had the luxury of sampling foods from the veritable fried delicacy utopia that is the Texas State Fair. Okay, so this post may not be about a food or place found in Austin, but certainly the fact that the fair is meant to be state-wide makes it slightly more relevant to the state’s capital. Right? Either way, this is the last week–the fair stops until next year on Oct. 17–to enjoy your weight in wacky golden-brown goodness. Fried beer, anyone?

Aquarelle’s Steak N’ Frit Sandwich at Austin City Limits 2010

Aquarelle's Steak N Frit Sandwich

Aquarelle's "Steak N' Frit" Sandwich

The Austin City Limits food court has long been home to the more casual fare of the city’s fine-dining restaurants. It’s a chance for the establishment to create one-of-a-kind, off the menu dishes that will not only be enticing to festival goers’ taste buds, but will be relatively simple to eat as well. A recent success story that comes to mind is that of Hudson’s on the Bend, whose ACL foray into the food of the everyman led to the creation of food trailer The Mighty Cone on South Congress. This year was no exception.
