If your TV watching habits are anything close to mine, you may have already recognized this photo.  If not, this video should be a sufficient explanation for those who are more productive than me with their time.   Got it now?  Right.  I’m talking about the cool slot-machine-meets-magic-eight-ball app which, admittedly, played a disproportionately large role in my decision to purchase an iPhone: Urbanspoon.  Does this make me a sucker for marketing?  Probably.

The idea is simple but elegant.  Seemingly inspired by the genius penny-pinching business structure behind coupon sites Groupon and LivingSocial, 5 Dollar Lunch posts information daily about a $5 lunch special offered by various local Austin restaurants.

Today while browsing through Eater Austin I was lucky enough to run across their post on the AustinFoodCarts app for the iPhone. I could never resist a good app, especially one with potentially boundless foodie usefulness (I’m not exactly sure what that means either, but you get the point). Besides, it’s free!
